Tour Plan

8:00 AM – Bangkok Hotel Pickup

Your adventure begins at 8:00 AM with a private pickup directly from your hotel in Bangkok. Relax in your air-conditioned vehicle as your professional driver and expert guide from Makhus greet you and introduce the day’s itinerary. Leaving behind the city’s hustle, enjoy a scenic 1.5-hour drive past lush countryside and small towns on the way to the historic city of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bang Pa-In Palace – Royal Summer Retreat

Your first destination is the magnificent Bang Pa-In Royal Palace, a former summer residence of Thai monarchs. Set along the tranquil banks of the Chao Phraya River, this palace complex combines Thai, Chinese, and European architectural styles, reflecting the international influence of Siam's past. Stroll through beautifully landscaped gardens, cross charming footbridges, and admire ornate pavilions and water features as your guide shares the royal history behind each structure. This peaceful and elegant setting offers a royal beginning to your cultural day tour.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon – Victory Chedi

Next, visit the towering Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, one of Ayutthaya’s most significant temples. Built in 1357, this historic site features a massive bell-shaped chedi erected to commemorate King Naresuan’s victory over the Burmese. Climb the chedi for sweeping views of the ancient city and walk through serene temple grounds lined with saffron-robed Buddha statues. This temple beautifully blends spiritual reverence with military legacy, offering insight into the kingdom’s resilience and devotion.

Thai Lunch – Authentic Local Flavors

By midday, you’ll pause for lunch at a local restaurant selected for its authentic flavors and welcoming atmosphere. Enjoy a handpicked menu of traditional Thai cuisine featuring classics like green curry, stir-fried vegetables, Thai omelet, and fragrant jasmine rice. The authentic Thai lunch experience allows you to taste the heart of central Thailand’s culinary tradition while recharging for the afternoon’s discoveries.

Wat Mahathat – Buddha in Tree Roots

After lunch, explore one of Ayutthaya’s most photographed and symbolic temples — Wat Mahathat. Famed for the mysterious Buddha head entwined in tree roots, this sacred site once served as the spiritual center of the kingdom. As you walk among the weathered stupas and sandstone ruins, your guide will explain the temple’s fall during the Burmese invasion and the miraculous survival of the Buddha’s face. This serene and surreal location invites deep reflection and reverence.

Wat Phra Sri Sanphet – Royal Temple Ruins

Next, visit Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, once the royal temple within the Grand Palace grounds. Reserved for kings and royal ceremonies, this temple housed no monks — only majesty. The three iconic chedis contain the ashes of ancient Siamese kings and stand as proud symbols of the kingdom’s glory. As you explore the ruins, imagine the ceremonial processions that once filled this sacred space. Its historical significance and elegant symmetry make it one of the must-see temples in Ayutthaya.

Vihara Mongkhon Bophit – Bronze Buddha Hall

Adjacent to Wat Phra Sri Sanphet is Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit, where you’ll encounter one of Thailand’s largest bronze Buddha images. Originally cast in the 15th century, this immense seated Buddha radiates calm and grandeur. Despite suffering damage during Ayutthaya’s fall, it has been lovingly restored and now sits in a bright, spacious hall where locals and visitors alike come to pay their respects. The atmosphere here is one of serenity and spiritual grace.

Wat Lokayasutharam – Reclining Buddha

Your final temple visit is the peaceful Wat Lokayasutharam, best known for its colossal Reclining Buddha, measuring 42 meters in length. Unlike the more elaborate temples, this open-air site is surrounded by quiet fields and scattered ruins, giving it a distinctly tranquil charm. The statue’s serene smile and flowing robes offer the perfect closing note to your day of spiritual and historical exploration.

5:00 PM – Return to Bangkok Hotel

With your Ayutthaya journey complete, you’ll begin the return drive to Bangkok. Reflect on the timeless beauty and deep cultural heritage you've experienced as you travel comfortably back to the city. Expect to arrive at your hotel around 5:00 PM, with a camera full of memories and a deeper appreciation for Thailand’s ancient past.

Instagrammable Ayutthaya

We saw all of the highlights of each of the temple ruins, but started in the morning with visiting the Royal Summer Palace complex for the royal family today. The best part was our guide, Phacharakrit Wichitwarakul whose nickame is "Kit." He unfolded the stories so that we could understand and experience very best during our Private Ayutthaya Day Tour - including how Kit took pictures of us with Instagramable settings!.

Comfortable and on point tour

The personal touch and individual pace of the tour There was a lot to take in but it was all nicely tailored to our interest and time constraints. The tour managed to indulge us in a wonderful lunch at a local restaurant and took care of all our entrance fees to the venues. Our tour guide Joy was well informed and kept the conversation informative and exciting. Thank you Viator. Keep up the good work.

Horrible guide

The tour itself was ok, but the guide, jackie, not so much. Throughout the day i noticed he was smelling some plastic bottle that smelled like a strong vicky vaporub. Later he told me it was a "thai medicine" for when you are tired, so basically a legal high. On the ride back he was snorting it every 30 seconds, to the point the car was smelling like it after 15min. And then he started talking a lot about bars, girls, massages, really unprofessional and disgusting!!!.

Fantastic Experience

A fantastic trip with a very skilled and careful driver and Aey, the best possible guide. She was so knowledgeable and made it her mission to make me feel comfortable. I learnt so much about Thai history and even Bangkok. I really recommend to start the trip at 7 or 8 am, as the morning is the most peaceful time in Ayutthaya.

Ancient Thai Capital Experience

Wonderful guide and driver! The ancient capital was worth seeing and learning g about. The inclusion of lunch is fine but the restaurant was not a good one and the language barrier got in the way of a better dining experience. Please consider a Fixed Items lunch for this tour. Too much confusion currently.

Excellent tour and guide, average food

Benjamat, our guide, was awesome she was extremely knowledgeable about the area and very flexible with our request to add an extra site to the tour. The car was very clean and the driver was prompt, helpful and safe. The only slight downside of this tour is the food provided is a buffet which was a little disappointing compared to some of the other tours.

Really depends on the guide

The places we went to were wonderful. My issue was with the guide, who seemed to lack professionalism. She asked the driver to stop at an weekend open market. I was happy to see a very local market, versus a tourist-oriented one. However, she started shopping, complete ignoring me, and I ended up waiting for her at the entrance. Fortunately, the driver saw me and called her, and she came running, carrying many bags. At the historical site, I could tell she was tired, and she tried to rush me, but I told her to sit and wait for me as I walked around to take more pictures. I was disappointed with the guide, but I was very impressed with the driver who was much more considerate of me, and that was the reason for the extra star rating...

Guide not to High Standard

Happy with the transportation, however the guide language level (English) and knowledge was very poor. Whilst the guide (Wat) is a nice man, in conversation he revealed he became a guide 3 months ago, securing the job via a friend. He has no guide experience. This was clear during the day trip. He knew very limited and vague information on the sites history and was not able to answer my questions. I basically relied on information around the sites. I was also disappointed with the approach to lunch. We were taken to Mong Doo Ruea Restaurant. Certainly looked nice but our guide Wat informed us our budget was limited to 400 BHT for 2 persons, which eliminated much of the menu. Given the tour costs over 300 EUR (almost 11000 BHT) one would think a sufficient part of that will go towards lunch. In summary - we did not get our money worth. We basically paid 11000 BHT for a driver and entrance tickets, with limitations placed on our lunch and a guide who had insufficient knowledge and grasp of English. If the tour operator reads this review, at the very least they should consider a partial refund. But I doubt they will.
